Do not tow on contaminated brakes: Grease can sharply reduce braking and a failed seal can be connected to bearing or spindle trouble. Remove the hub and inspect the complete wheel position before returning it to service.

How Dexter E-Z Lube moves grease

The E-Z Lube spindle contains a grease passage. Grease enters at the spindle end, reaches the inner bearing, then moves back through the hub toward the outer bearing and cap opening. The inner seal has to contain and redirect that grease.

The design does not make the hub maintenance-free. Dexter states that E-Z Lube-equipped axles still follow its service manual procedures for brakes, hubs, bearings, seals, wheels and tires.

Why grease can reach the brake drum

  • Seal was damaged, hardened, cut or installed crooked
  • Old seal was reused after hub removal
  • Spindle seal surface is worn, scored or corroded
  • Wrong seal was installed
  • Grease was introduced too quickly
  • Incompatible grease affected consistency or flow
  • Bearing or hub condition allowed abnormal movement

Dexter advises against pneumatic grease guns because rapid delivery can force grease past the seal or dislodge it. Dexter also says the seals must be replaced before lubricating E-Z Lube hubs that have been removed.

External signs before hub removal

Grease may appear on the back of the brake backing plate, inside the wheel, around the cap or mixed with brake dust. Weak braking, one cool brake during a comparison test, a hot hub, odor and uneven stopping can accompany contamination. Photograph the leak path before cleaning.

What to inspect after the hub comes off

Hub removal exposes the grease path and brake. Inspect the seal surface and bearings along with every friction component; do not stop after wiping the spindle.
  1. Inspect inner and outer bearings and their races for pitting, scoring, heat color and roughness.
  2. Inspect the spindle bearing journals and seal surface for wear or damage.
  3. Identify the exact seal and determine why it failed.
  4. Check the drum and magnet armature surface for grease and damage.
  5. Inspect shoes, magnet, adjuster, springs and lever.
  6. Confirm the grease type and whether different products were mixed.

What normally gets replaced

The actual parts depend on inspection. At minimum, a removed hub generally receives the seal specified by the axle procedure. Damaged bearings are replaced with matching races. A scored spindle may require professional axle repair or replacement.

Grease-soaked brake lining should not be trusted because it looks clean after solvent. Correct the leak, then replace contaminated shoes or the complete brake assembly according to the brake maker. Inspect the drum and magnet surface as well.

How to lubricate without repeating the problem

  • Use the axle-specified grease; Dexter's E-Z Lube literature calls for lithium-complex NLGI #2, but verify the current manual for the axle.
  • Do not mix greases unless compatibility is confirmed.
  • Use the method and speed shown by Dexter, not a pneumatic gun.
  • Rotate the hub if the procedure calls for it and allow old grease to exit as designed.
  • Stop if grease does not flow normally or pressure rises unexpectedly.
  • Install the cap and plug correctly, then inspect for leakage after a cautious test.

Why topping off is not bearing service

Grease color at the cap cannot show pitted rollers, a loose race, a damaged spindle or contaminated brake lining. Scheduled hub removal remains the only way to see those parts. Water exposure, long storage, a hot-hub event and unknown service history are reasons to inspect sooner.

FAQ

Did the E-Z Lube system itself fail?

Not necessarily. The contamination shows that grease crossed the seal path. The cause could be the seal, installation, spindle surface, lubricant, hub condition or application method.

Can I clean the brake shoes?

Do not assume cleaned lining has regained predictable friction. Replace contaminated friction parts as the brake maker requires after repairing the leak.

Can I just install a new seal?

Only after inspecting the bearing, race, spindle seal surface, drum and brake. A new seal cannot correct a damaged surface or loose bearing condition.
