Start by writing down the exact message. “No trailer,” “open ground,” “output short,” “overload” and “power loss” point to different electrical conditions. Photograph the display before disconnecting the trailer.
Why the lights can work while the controller says no trailer
The seven-way connector carries separate circuits for running lights, turn/brake lamps, auxiliary power and electric brake output. The controller can lose its path through the brake magnets and ground while the lighting circuits continue to work. A good turn signal is not a brake-circuit test.
Tekonsha states that its Prodigy P3 needs a complete circuit through the brake magnets and back to ground to recognize the trailer. Its listed causes for “No Trailer Connected” include an open brake-output circuit and an open brake ground.
Inspect the connector before using a meter
- Secure the tow vehicle and chock the trailer.
- Turn the system off as the vehicle/controller instructions require.
- Inspect the plug and socket for moisture, green or white corrosion, overheated plastic and road debris.
- Look for spread contacts, pushed-back terminals and a plug that does not seat firmly.
- Check whether the cord pulls tight during turns or rubs the coupler, tongue jack or weight-distribution hardware.
Clean only with connector-safe products and repair damaged terminals. Forcing bent contacts can reduce spring tension and create another intermittent connection.
Separate the tow vehicle from the trailer
A compatible seven-way tester can show whether the tow vehicle provides the expected circuits, but use one designed for brake-controller diagnosis. Some controllers send a small sensing signal, and vehicle modules can behave differently without the real brake load connected.
Follow the controller's own diagnostic menu. Verify controller power and ground, then stop-lamp input and brake output. Do not probe modern vehicle wiring at random; protected tow modules can be damaged.
Trace the trailer brake-output and ground path
From the trailer connector, the brake-output wire commonly runs to axle wiring and branches to each magnet. The return ground must also make a low-resistance path under load. Inspect accessible points for:
- Loose or unsupported splices near the tongue
- Wire rubbed through where it crosses an axle or frame opening
- Connections hanging near moving suspension parts
- A frame ground attached over paint, rust or corrosion
- A conductor broken inside intact-looking insulation
- Magnet wires damaged where they enter the backing plate
If the warning appears only over bumps, the stationary inspection should include gently moving the accessible harness while watching the controller. Keep wheels chocked and never perform this test while driving.
Use current and continuity tests carefully
A continuity beep with the system off does not prove the circuit carries current. Conversely, a sensing voltage on the brake-output wire may be normal for a controller looking for the trailer. Use the controller and axle specifications to test under command.
Total current should reflect the number and type of magnets. If total draw is low, compare wheel branches. If it is excessive or the controller reports a short, inspect for a shorted magnet, damaged brake wire or wet/contaminated connector. Current testing can exceed ordinary handheld-meter limits; use qualified service when the method is uncertain.
Do not overlook the breakaway wiring
The breakaway switch joins the emergency battery to the same trailer brake circuit. Confirm the pin is fully seated and the switch wiring is undamaged. Do not pull the pin with the trailer connected to the tow vehicle unless the exact kit/controller procedure allows it; some instructions specifically require the seven-way to be disconnected during testing.
What the repair should prove
- The controller recognizes the trailer every time the plug is seated.
- The connection remains stable while the stationary connector and accessible harness move through their normal range.
- Every required wheel brake applies and releases.
- No short, overload, open-ground or power-loss message remains.
- A low-speed loaded test follows the controller maker's setup instructions.

Why does it say no trailer when all lights work?
The brake-output and brake-ground path is separate from the lighting branches. Repair the brake circuit rather than treating working lights as proof.
Why does the message flash only while moving?
Look for a loose seven-way contact, cord tension, axle-wire chafe, a bad splice or a conductor that opens when the suspension moves.
Should I replace the controller first?
No. Prove controller power, ground, stop input and output, then prove the connector and trailer circuit. A new controller will report the same open circuit if the fault is on the trailer.
