A little change in motor sound is normal on a bypass pump. A sharp on-off-on-off pulse every second is not. The useful first question is whether the SHURflo cycles only while water is being used or wakes up when the plumbing should be sealed.
Those symptoms have different test paths. Mixing them leads to unnecessary pressure-switch adjustment.
If it cycles while a faucet is partly open
The 4008 may be delivering more water than the fixture allows. A clogged aerator, restrictive shower head, pinched line or undersized plumbing makes pressure rise quickly to shutoff, then fall as the fixture consumes water. The pump repeatedly crosses the switch threshold.
Open the same faucet fully. If cycling smooths out, clean the aerator and compare another fixture. Remove and inspect the shower head and screen. Check a water filter for restriction; SHURflo notes that a separate feed may be needed for some filter arrangements.
If it cycles with every fixture closed
Pressure is bleeding down. Dry and inspect the toilet valve, outside shower, water heater, low-point drains, city-water check valve, filter housing and every visible fitting. Watch for a drip at the pump strainer and listen near the toilet after the pedal is released.
If no external leak appears, dirty or scaled pump valves can allow internal leakback. That often creates a brief pump run every few minutes without any water use.
Time the interval
- Several pulses per second during low flow: restriction or bypass/shutoff interaction.
- One short run every few minutes with fixtures closed: plumbing leak, check-valve leak or internal valve leakback.
- Long run after sitting overnight: pressure loss, loss of prime or an air pocket.
- Random cycling while driving: shut the pump off; movement can expose a loose fitting or allow a fixture to open.
Check the easy restrictions
Start with faucet aerators, shower screens, a clogged whole-house filter and valves that are only partly open. Confirm the fresh-tank outlet and winterizing valve are fully positioned. A restriction on the pump inlet can also make flow unstable, though it more often causes noise, poor prime or low output.
Clean the inlet strainer and inspect the clear bowl for cracks. Seat the O-ring correctly so the pump does not pull air.
Verify voltage while the motor runs
Low voltage changes pump speed and pressure behavior. Measure at the pump leads, not only at the battery. Check the ground with the same care as the positive feed. A connector can pass enough current for the pump to run but still drop voltage under load.
Understand bypass and pressure-switch adjustment
The 4008 uses an adjustable bypass to keep water moving at low fixture flow without hammering the pressure switch. Pentair's manual explains that restrictive plumbing may require adjustment, but the bypass and shutoff settings interact. The bypass must not be set above shutoff pressure or the pump may run continuously.
Before turning a screw, label the pump model, photograph the starting positions and eliminate leaks and restrictions. Make small changes only as the exact manual directs, then test at several faucet flows. If the pump worked correctly for years and suddenly cycles, a new restriction or leak is more likely than a setting that changed itself.
When an accumulator helps
An accumulator can reduce pulsing and provide a smoother low flow, but it should not be used to hide a leak or a faulty pump head. It must be rated for potable water and charged according to its instructions with water pressure released.
When to rebuild or replace the head
If the plumbing holds pressure, voltage is correct and low-flow restrictions are cleared, inspect the pump head for debris, scale or damaged valves. Pentair identifies dirty valves as a cause of occasional cycling. Use a model-matched service kit and replace any cracked housing.
A clean diagnosis should end with stable flow at a partly open fixture and no unexplained starts when every outlet is closed.

Frequently asked questions
Why does my SHURflo 4008 pulse at low flow?
The fixture may be too restrictive, causing pressure to cross the switch threshold repeatedly. A clogged aerator, shower head, filter or bypass setting can contribute.
Why does the pump run for one second every few minutes?
Water pressure is leaking away through plumbing, a fixture, the city-water check valve or dirty internal pump valves.
Will an accumulator stop SHURflo cycling?
It can smooth low-flow operation, but it will not repair a leak, restricted fixture, incorrect bypass setting or damaged pump valve.
