Before you start: Rooftop A/C service involves high voltage, moving fan parts and capacitors. Keep owner checks to filters, controls, vents, safe voltage monitoring and visible icing.

When a GE RV air conditioner runs but does not cool the trailer, start with what the unit can breathe and what voltage it is being fed. A sealed refrigeration failure is possible, but it is not the first assumption.

Clean filters and open the airflow path

Wash or replace the return filters and make sure the return grille is not blocked. Weak airflow can make the unit feel warm, create freeze-up, and reduce the amount of air reaching the living space.

Check for cold air bypass

Remove the interior grille only if the manual allows it and inspect for obvious gaps where supply air can leak back into return air. Ducted RV systems depend on a clean separation between cold supply and warm return.

Look for ice before blaming the thermostat

If air starts cold, then becomes weak or warm, the evaporator may be icing. Shut cooling off and run fan until thawed. Icing points back to airflow, humidity, fan speed, freeze sensor or service issues.

Watch power quality in summer

Low campground voltage can cause poor cooling, compressor cycling, breaker trips and hard starts. A basic RV power monitor can save a lot of guessing.

Set expectations for a heat-soaked RV

Start the A/C early, close shades, use high fan during pull-down and reduce door openings. On very hot days, one rooftop unit may not make the RV feel like a house.

Tools, difficulty and likely cost

  • Difficulty: Beginner for observation, cleaning and reset checks; professional for live 120V, propane pressure, sealed refrigeration or internal control testing.
  • Useful tools: Filter access, Thermometer, Plug-in voltage monitor, Flashlight.
  • Likely cost: Filter and air-sealing improvements are low cost; control, fan or sealed-system diagnosis requires service.

FAQ

Why is my GE RV AC blowing cool but not cold?

Dirty filters, poor return airflow, duct leakage, low voltage, high humidity or heavy sun load can all reduce cooling.

Why does it drip water inside after running awhile?

Ice melt, poor drain path, roof-gasket issues or plenum air leaks can cause interior dripping.

Can I add refrigerant to a GE RV rooftop AC?

Most RV rooftop units are sealed. Refrigerant diagnosis should be handled by qualified service.
