Important: Rooftop units contain hazardous voltage and capacitors that can retain energy after disconnection. Refrigerant and capacitor work belongs to trained service personnel.

If the fan blows but the RV stays hot, begin with conditions you can safely observe. An RV in full sun may start with walls, furniture and ductwork far above outdoor temperature. It can take hours to pull down, but the supply air should still become meaningfully cooler than the return air once the compressor is operating steadily.

Make sure the compressor is actually running

A fan-only sound is lighter and steadier. Compressor startup usually adds a deeper hum and a noticeable load. Set the thermostat to cool, fan to auto and the target at least five degrees below room temperature. Then wait through the built-in anti-short-cycle delay. Rapidly switching the unit off and on can prevent normal restart and stress the compressor.

Fix airflow before diagnosing refrigeration

Remove and clean the return-air filters. Open supply registers, clear the return grille and look for collapsed duct sections. Inside the ceiling assembly, the divider between return and supply air must prevent cold discharge air from being sucked immediately back into the unit. Gaps can be sealed only with materials approved for HVAC plenums.

If the evaporator is iced, turn cooling off and operate fan-only until all ice melts. Never chip ice from the coil. Icing commonly follows dirty filters, closed vents, blower trouble, a displaced freeze sensor or a refrigeration fault.

Measure the temperature difference

After 15 to 20 minutes of stable operation, measure air near the return and at a nearby supply outlet using the same thermometer. The result is diagnostic, not a universal pass/fail number: humidity, fan speed, sensor location and equipment design all matter. Little or no temperature drop with a confirmed running compressor points toward a refrigeration or compressor problem. A healthy drop but rising room temperature points toward extreme heat load, air leakage or insufficient capacity.

Consider shore power and low voltage

Air conditioners draw substantial current. Low campground voltage, undersized extension cords and overloaded adapters can cause poor starting, overheating or breaker trips. Turn off other high-draw appliances and use a listed energy-management device or appropriate meter to verify supply conditions. Do not keep resetting a breaker that trips repeatedly.

Improve performance in extreme heat

  • Start cooling before the RV heat-soaks.
  • Shade windows and windshield areas.
  • Close roof vents and exterior doors.
  • Use interior fans to mix air without blocking returns.
  • Cook outside or use lower-heat appliances.
  • Keep the rooftop condenser clear according to the manufacturer’s cleaning procedure.

Check airflow like a technician would

Airflow is the first thing to prove because it affects every other symptom. A rooftop A/C can have a healthy compressor and still cool poorly if return air is blocked, cold supply air leaks back into the return, the filter is packed with dust, or the freeze sensor is not reading the coil correctly. Remove the interior filters, clean the return grille, and make sure bedding, storage bins or cabinet doors are not blocking the return path.

On many ducted RV installations, the divider inside the ceiling assembly is just as important as the filter. Warm return air and cold supply air must stay separated. If cold discharge air is pulled straight back into the return side, the unit may short-cycle, freeze, drip water inside or make the RV feel warm even though cold air is being produced at the roof unit. Use only approved HVAC foil tape or manufacturer-approved sealing materials; cloth duct tape usually fails in heat and moisture.

Use temperature readings without turning them into a myth

Many owners hear that every A/C should show one exact temperature split. Real units vary with humidity, fan speed, return-air temperature, sensor location, altitude, roof temperature and system design. The useful test is comparison. Use the same thermometer at the return and then at the closest supply vent after the compressor has run steadily for 15 to 20 minutes. If the air is clearly cooler but the room never catches up, the issue may be heat load, duct loss or insufficient capacity. If there is almost no difference and the compressor is definitely running, the problem moves toward sealed-system, compressor or electrical diagnosis.

Do not ignore campground voltage

Summer A/C complaints often appear at campgrounds because voltage drops when everyone is cooling at once. Low voltage can make the compressor start hard, run hot, trip breakers or shut down on overload. It can also make a weak capacitor look worse. If you use an EMS or power monitor, check voltage while the A/C is starting and running, not only before the load turns on. Extension cords, loose adapters and worn pedestals can create the same symptom.

What to document before calling for service

A good technician can move faster if you write down the thermostat setting, outdoor temperature, return-air temperature, supply-air temperature, campground voltage, whether the compressor starts, whether the fan runs on fan-only mode, and whether ice forms. Also note whether the problem happens on shore power, generator power or both. That information separates power-source trouble from rooftop-unit trouble and can save a wasted service call.
