Portable generator safety: Run outside only, far from windows, doors, vents and neighboring RVs. Never use a male-to-male cord or backfeed an RV or building.

Start with generator output and breakers

Reset the generator receptacle breaker and any overload reset using the owner manual. If the generator has an overload light or CO shutoff indicator, record it before cycling. Test with a simple known load before connecting the RV.

Reduce RV loads before plugging in

Turn off the air conditioner, electric water heater, converter/charger if controllable, microwave, fridge electric mode and space heaters. Plug in with low load, then add one appliance at a time.

Use the correct adapter and cord

A plug adapter changes shape, not capacity. A 30A RV connected to a smaller receptacle must stay within that smaller source. Long, undersized cords create voltage drop that can trip overloads and make AC motors unhappy.

GFCI and neutral issues

Some portable generators, RV surge protectors and GFCI devices do not play nicely together depending on bonding and protection design. Do not defeat safety devices with unsafe adapters. Use the generator and RV/EMS manuals, and ask a qualified electrician if grounding/bonding questions appear.
