Atwood water heaters are still found in many RVs, even though branding and ownership have changed over time. The name on the door matters for parts, but the troubleshooting habit is universal: prove water in the tank, prove the bypass position, then split propane problems from electric problems.
Make sure hot water is actually leaving the tank
Open a hot faucet and let it run. If the water starts warm then quickly goes cold, the tank may not be heating. If it stays lukewarm, a bypass or mixing issue is more likely. Outside showers with hot and cold knobs left open can also cross-mix and cool the whole system.
Check winterizing bypass valves
After storage, one wrong valve can send cold water around the heater or mix cold water into the hot outlet. Look for one-, two- or three-valve bypass plumbing near the back of the tank. If the plumbing is hidden, follow the owner manual or ask the RV manufacturer for the valve layout.
If propane mode fails
Use the same ignition sequence as other DSI heaters: 12V board power, gas valve, spark, flame and flame proving. A fault light after ignition attempts should not be ignored or reset over and over.
If electric mode fails
Electric water heating needs 120V supply, a good switch path, thermostat/high-limit continuity and a working heating element. Do not remove element wiring or test live 120V unless trained. A burned element is common after accidental dry-fire.
Do not confuse recovery time with failure
A six-gallon tank can be emptied quickly by a long shower. If the water is hot at first, then cools after heavy use, the heater may simply need recovery time. Propane plus electric mode, if the model supports it, often recovers faster.
Tools, difficulty and likely cost
- Difficulty: Beginner for observation, cleaning and reset checks; professional for live 120V, propane pressure, sealed refrigeration or internal control testing.
- Useful tools: Valve layout photo, Flashlight, Thermometer, Manual/model number.
- Likely cost: Bypass and outside-shower fixes are free; elements, thermostats, boards and burner repairs depend on access and model.

FAQ
Why is my Atwood water heater only lukewarm?
The most common causes are bypass-valve position, outside-shower cross-mixing, heavy hot-water use, or a failed heat source.
Can an electric element fail even if the breaker is on?
Yes. A breaker can be on while the element is burned out, the switch path is open, or a thermostat/limit is not passing power.
Why did it stop working after winterizing?
A bypass valve, drain plug, outside shower valve or air pocket is often left in the wrong state after de-winterizing.
