On many Norcold absorption refrigerators, the check light appears after the refrigerator fails to operate correctly on the selected energy source. Most owners see it during propane operation, but AUTO mode can make the first clue confusing.
Notice which mode failed
If the fridge was in AUTO, it may have lost 120V power and switched to propane, then failed ignition. Check the display mode and verify whether the rear refrigerator outlet has power before assuming it is only a gas problem.
Check 12V control power
Norcold controls need stable 12V DC. A weak battery, poor converter output or bad ground can cause lockouts and erratic behavior even while the RV is plugged in.
Confirm propane supply without forcing resets
Light a stove burner briefly to help purge air and confirm the cylinder valve is open, then turn it off. Try one normal refrigerator reset according to the manual. Repeated clicking and lockout means the burner, electrode, gas pressure or board needs diagnosis.
Inspect the outside compartment
With the refrigerator off, look for nests, rust flakes, water intrusion, loose wires or soot in the burner area. Do not poke the gas orifice or bend the electrode blindly.
If the light returns
Write down whether it failed on AC, LP or AUTO. That single detail can save a technician a lot of time and keep you from replacing unrelated parts.
Tools, difficulty and likely cost
- Difficulty: Beginner for observation, cleaning and reset checks; professional for live 120V, propane pressure, sealed refrigeration or internal control testing.
- Useful tools: Manual, Flashlight, Outlet tester, Refrigerator thermometer.
- Likely cost: Supply and outlet checks are low cost; burner cleaning, electrode work, board diagnosis or LP pressure testing needs service.

FAQ
Why does my Norcold check light come on in AUTO mode?
The refrigerator may have lost AC power and then failed on propane, or the selected source did not complete its safety sequence.
Can low battery voltage cause a check light?
Yes. The refrigerator control board needs stable 12V power for both propane and electric operation.
Is it safe to keep resetting the fridge?
No. One reset after checking supply is reasonable. Repeated lockout needs diagnosis.
