Before touching anything, find the generator model and spec number. On Cummins Onan sets, the model/spec information is on the generator data tag, and the spec letter matters because manuals and parts can change across the same basic model family.
Step 1: Record the symptom exactly
- No crank: the starter does not turn the engine.
- Cranks but will not start: the starter turns, but the engine never catches.
- Starts then dies: the engine runs briefly and shuts down or faults.
- Runs but no RV power: the generator engine sounds normal, but outlets or air conditioners stay dead.
- Runs rough or surges: the engine hunts, smokes, vibrates or cannot carry load smoothly.
Step 2: Preserve the fault code
Many built-in RV generators blink or display a fault after shutdown. Record it before resetting. Some codes are first-level prompts and require a second step in the manual to retrieve the detailed code. Do not clear the clue and then start replacing parts blind.
Step 3: Check the safe basics
With the generator off and cool, check oil level using the exact manual procedure, visible fuel supply, battery voltage, battery cables, air inlet, exhaust outlet and enclosure airflow. Keep panels and covers installed when running if the manual uses them to direct cooling air.
Step 4: Separate fuel problems from electrical-output problems
If the engine never runs correctly, focus on battery, oil, fuel, air and ignition/control inputs. If the engine runs normally but the RV has no 120V power, focus on the generator breaker, output, automatic transfer switch, energy management, inverter pass-through or RV main panel.
Step 5: Add load slowly
Start with large RV loads off. Let the generator stabilize, then add one load at a time. A rooftop air conditioner, microwave, converter/charger or electric water heater can overload a small generator or reveal a weak governor, fuel system or voltage-regulation problem.
Common generator paths
- Onan 4000 generator won't start
- Onan generator starts then dies
- Onan generator runs but no power in RV
- Onan generator surging under load
- RV generator transfer switch problems
When to stop
Stop and call generator service for repeated fault codes, fuel leaks, exhaust leaks, oil-pressure warnings, overheating, overspeed, internal electrical output testing, transfer-switch testing, governor work, carburetor removal, EFI diagnosis or anything that requires covers off while running.
Sources and review notes
Generator model/spec lookup and manual selection should follow the installed generator maker. Useful official references include Cummins RV generator manuals, Cummins Onan RV generator model listings and CPSC carbon monoxide safety guidance.
Use the guided path
If the generator is acting up right now, start with the symptom and preserve the fault code before resetting.
