Do not order a motor because the step is silent, and do not order a controller because it clicks. First identify the step assembly and describe exactly what it does. Lippert Kwikee, Coachstep and other powered steps can use different door-switch logic, wire colors and manual procedures.
Identify the step before testing
Look for a product label on the step frame, motor, controller or underbody mounting plate. Photograph the label and the connector arrangement before unplugging anything. Also note:
- whether the step is fully in, fully out or stopped between;
- whether the porch light or other nearby 12-volt loads work;
- whether the step changes when the ignition is turned on;
- whether the override switch changes the behavior;
- whether the motor is silent, clicks once, chatters, hums or runs.
Understand normal door, override and ignition logic
Most automatic entry steps respond to a door switch, an interior override switch and an ignition input. The override commonly holds the step extended while parked, while an ignition safety input may command retraction. The exact behavior varies, especially on older controls.
Do not assume the visible switch is defective because the step does not follow the door. A misaligned magnet, broken hinge-area wire, corroded connector or wrong controller input can produce the same symptom. Some magnetic door switches are normally open and others normally closed; substituting or jumping one without the correct diagram can reverse operation.
If the step is completely silent
- Check house-battery condition. The step needs stable 12-volt power even if the chassis engine starts normally.
- Find the correct protection. Inspect the labeled step fuse or breaker and any inline protection near the battery or controller. Replace a blown fuse only with the same rating.
- Inspect the main ground. A corroded frame ground can carry enough current for a test light yet fail when the motor is loaded.
- Try the ignition response. A step that retracts with ignition but ignores the door has proven that the motor and at least part of the controller path can work.
- Inspect connectors without entering the movement zone. Look for water, green corrosion, pulled pins and wires damaged by the door or step frame.
When using a meter, compare voltage at rest with voltage while the step is commanded. Battery voltage that disappears under load indicates a weak supply path; correct voltage reaching the motor while it remains motionless points toward the motor, gearbox or mechanical load.
If the controller clicks or the motor hums
A click means the system is not completely dead. Watch what happens to the lights and battery voltage when it clicks. Rapid chatter often accompanies low voltage or a poor connection. A solid click with no movement may mean the motor is not receiving useful current, or the linkage is at a hard stop.
Disconnect step power before touching the linkage. Look for gravel, a bent tread, a seized pivot, loose hardware or a linkage arm that has moved past its normal geometry. Do not put fingers between scissor arms to “feel” the bind. If lubrication is called for, use the product and points specified by the step manufacturer; heavy grease can collect road grit where a dry-film product was intended.
If the step moves at the wrong time
A step that extends with the door closed, cycles while driving or reacts when the door moves over bumps is a safety fault. Focus on the door magnet and switch, hinge-area wiring, controller connectors and ground.
- Confirm the magnet is present, tight and aligned with the sensor when the door closes.
- Gently move the door through its travel while watching for intermittent operation, keeping clear of the step.
- Inspect wiring where it flexes or passes through metal openings.
- Use the exact manual's test sequence for the door input; do not rely on wire color alone.
- If the step acts unpredictably, disable it in the travel-safe position until the fault is repaired.
Proving the motor is bad
A motor diagnosis needs two pieces of evidence: the controller is delivering the correct command at the motor connector, and the mechanism is not physically jammed. Because many step motors reverse direction by reversing polarity, both wires can serve as power or ground depending on the requested direction.
If the correct voltage and polarity change reach the disconnected motor connector while the switch or door is operated, inspect the connector pins and wiring tension before condemning the motor. A loose terminal may show voltage with no load but open when current is demanded. If the connection remains sound, the linkage moves freely with power safely removed, and the motor will not operate under the manufacturer test, motor or gearbox replacement is reasonable.
Make the step travel-safe
Never drive with the step hanging loose or partly extended. It can strike a curb, lane marker or another vehicle and can injure someone standing nearby. Use only the manual retraction or disconnect procedure for the exact model. After retracting it, confirm the step cannot drop from road vibration. Improvised wire or straps should not cross sharp edges, hot exhaust or moving suspension parts.
Read the result before buying parts
- No power at the controller: trace battery, fuse/breaker, disconnect, wiring and ground.
- Ignition retract works, door operation does not: focus on door switch/magnet, override input and related wiring.
- Voltage reaches the motor but collapses when connected: inspect terminals, grounds and supply resistance before replacing the motor.
- Motor runs but the step does not move correctly: inspect gearbox, linkage and mounting.
- Step moves unpredictably: treat it as a door-input or wiring safety fault and disable it travel-safe.
Frequently asked questions
Why does the step work with the ignition but not with the door?
The ignition retract circuit may be working while the door-switch, magnet, override-switch or controller input is not. Identify the exact system and test the door input according to its manual.
Why does the step click but not move?
Low voltage, a high-resistance ground, a jammed linkage, worn gearbox or weak motor can all allow a click without movement. The sound narrows the path but does not identify the failed part by itself.
Can I drive with the step extended?
No. Retract and positively secure it using the manufacturer procedure or arrange mobile service before travel.
